Though a number of people say that this is a gimmick for Twitter to try and stay relevant, it's more likely a continuation of a trend among social media platforms to host more content. In short, an arrangement that will likely continue well into 2016. The share price of Apple suppliers fell dramatically on the news, suggesting that this wasn't part of the plan.
