In Netflix's earnings report today, investors are looking for subscriber growth to back up Hastings's model. Peter will be interviewing Hastings during the earnings call today, so tweet at him with any questions you have. [Steven Russolillo | The Wall Street Journal] • WhatsApp is dropping its $1 subscription fee, but founder and CEO Jan Koum swears that the Facebook-owned messaging service won't be showing ads to its users to make money. This indicates that WhatsApp is going the way of Facebook Messenger, with plans to make money through third-party integrations. [Ina Fried | Re/code] • Univision, the Spanish-language broadcaster, is acquiring a controlling stake in The Onion. If you're looking for a rationale for the deal, it could be as simple as this: Univision wants to expand its digital footprint, and the pioneering satirical publisher has been on the blocks for a couple of years. [David Folkenflik | NPR] • The World Economic Forum in Davos kicks off on Wednesday, the annual gathering of the global power elite that's held in the Swiss Alps. Expect the main topics of conversation to be global economics and inequality, though the Forum's theme this year is supposed to be "the impact of new technology and robots." [Ben Hirschler and Noah Barkin |Reuters] • On February 17 and 18, some of the biggest names in media will be gathering at the Code/Media conference at the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel, Calif.
